www.sidneynolantrust.orgNick Lloyd lives in Llanfair Caereinion in Montgomeryshire, he has made sculpture in stone for various International Symposia, in wood for the Lake Vyrnwy Sculpture Park and most recently cast iron for the exhibition Ironstone at Kidwelly Castle in Carmarthenshire.
This two day course follows on from working with some students from Hereford School of Art where we explored The Rodd and its
working farm land, finding ways of working with the landscape and developing the idea of an intervention with a place –
towards the notion of a sculpture trail through the woods and farmland around The Rodd. The two day course “Working Wood , Carving in a Place” will allow for an introduction to ways of carving and handling wood
through the use mainly of hand tools, but allowing for something to be made which might find a site or a home in the environs of The Rodd. There are discrete and subtle sites around The Rodd, open fields, old hedgerows, barns and outhouses, new and old woodland, open paths and closed off glades, a lot of fallen timber, and some dried wood more suitable for carving. The
course would be suitable for both the beginner and the more experienced, interested in the skills of making and the problems
of siting works in a place. Above all this is a chance to experience a very special place in a congenial, informal and
supportive working environment. The course will start with an introductory talk, a walk around the Rodd, a chance to get acquainted with each other, and with
wood working tools and their safe use, allowing plenty of time to make something new.The second day will allow for time to finish and negotiate/speculate on its place in the world.
This year the workshop will be based in the Grain Barn on Rodd Farm.

www.sidneynolantrust.orgDavid Walker has spent over 30 years in Art Education lecturing in Ceramics and Fine Art.
In his sculptural work, the carving of a series of wild geese and domestic geese follows the tradition of direct carving. He
starts with the block, there are no drawings or models made.Although figurative, these sculptures are concerned with the inter-relationships of surfaces, with planes and masses, expressing an inner feeling of structure and growth, tactile sensuous rhythm and strength. David combines organic form with
sharp incised lines. They are ordinary moments made significant by mallet and chisel. David is also a writer of short poems, and was a former Secretary of The British Haiku Society, published in GB, USA, Japan and in many Anthologies. He is currently creating Mixed Media Sculptures combining his poems. This course of evening workshops is suitable for beginners and more experienced artists alike.
